Elbetitsa
The Elbetitsa, a traditional Bulgarian symbol, has always captivated me with its beautiful yet simplistic design, which simultaneously allows for intricate complexity. As a Bulgarian-born artist, I felt inspired to delve into my cultural roots, and these ancient, stunning symbols provided the perfect subject for my exploration. This project is something i hope to come back to again. The idea of harmony is embedded in the meaning of this symbol. Traditionally, the two crosses forming the shape symbolize the four primary directions of the world. They combine in a shared stable core that keeps them in sync with one another. It was common practice to embroider the scroll at the end of the sleeves, costumes, and skirts because it was believed to protect against bad powers, black magic, or "evil eyes." Using simple square shapes to construct the signs invites open interpretation, making each Elbetitsa truly unique.
